Mardi Gras season here in New Orleans is one of my favorite times of the year. We’re in full swing and the parades are rolling! I’m lucky enough to get to ride in the Krewe of one of my absolute FAVORITE parades. The Krewe of Muses is made up of over 1,000 members, all of which are women. Theming itself after the nine daughters of Zeus, Muses incorporates each virtue owned by the daughters described in Ancient Greek mythology quoting, “each virtue seems to thrive in the mystique of New Orleans”.

Celebrating the “wildness” of the muses, the Krewe puts on an amazing parade. Not only is it a huge party but it’s a beautiful parade to see! Get ready to see plenty of shoes! Muses has sort of adopted the shoe as its mascot. You’ll see women marching in groups holding poles with larger-than-life shoes dangling from the top, all made from LED lights.
Some of women who ride on the floats throw the most highly coveted item of the night…a recycled shoe, uniquely crafted by hand using glitter and other decorations. It will be the most valuable item you come across all season, perhaps until Zulu throws throws their coconuts on Fat Tuesday.
Many women work months out of the year to get their shoes looking as pretty as can be. I personally enjoy decorating mine as a sort of therapy. Here are some examples:
Each year’s Honorary Muse rides in the Krewe’s 17-foot tall fiber optic shoe float. This year we are happy to welcome Solange Knowles to our group of lovely ladies. “It is a true and incredible honor to be the 2016 Honorary Muse. I am immensely humbled to join such an inspiring organization that celebrates such diversity, leadership, and philanthropy,” Knowles says in the Muses news release.
