Corsets were first worn in 16th century Europe, but were at their most popular during the Victorian era.

While originally underwear used to give heavy garments a structured shape, as womankind move into the mid 19th century they were deemed too lovely to be kept hidden anymore, and moved into the realm of outerwear. First as costumes for burlesque performers, which caused quite a scandal, and then considered acceptable as part of a costume or for fancy dress.

By the mid 20th century, evening gowns with corset-like bodices were de rigueur.

Below are me top three picks for both costume and evening this Carnival season:

This black and white striped cotton overbust corset is a great choice for costume. Picture it with a black petticoat, lace up boots, and top hat for a Circus look.

You can’t go wrong in with black and nude. Pair this with a floor length sweeping black satin skirt to be picture perfect at any of this season’s balls.

This corset by Jane Woolrich is truly a work of art. Perfect for both costume or evening. For costume pair it with lacy bloomers, or for evening a full skirt to accentuate the panniers.
